What is Twitter?

Twitter is a free social networking and microblogging service that allows users to broadcast short posts (140 characters max) called Tweets. It is used by individuals, businesses, organisations and can be a useful tool to use in Higher Education.

  • Keep up with the latest trends in areas of interest
  • Join group discussions and debates
  • Network with people that interest you

 Twitter tools and features

  • Tweet – join or start a conversation with a tweet
  • Retweet – if you see a tweet you like, retweet it to spread the word
  • Post replies and mentions
  • Include photos and videos (2 minutes 20 seconds)
  • Follow – follow accounts to see all their tweets
  • Search for specific tweets, accounts or ongoing conversations
  • Hashtag – add a hashtag before a relevant keyword or phrase in your tweet to categorise the tweet and allow it to show more easily in Twitter search
  • Connect tab – general suggestions to connect you with accounts that might be of personal interest to you
  • Twitter polls – vote in a poll or create your own poll
